Generation 1991
Preface
This is the first time I have been asked to be the Faculty Advisor for Generation. I can now say that I was honoured by the invitation and gratified to learn that my duties were largely honorific.
The University of Windsor has been, for as long as I have been witness, now over thirty years, a hospitable environment for young writers. As I write these words I think of all the useful advice I have given to those young writers. It was well-meant advice and sometimes listened to. I will probably give more advice in the future. But, wisely, each writer has gone his or her own lonely way. The University of Windsor is a congenial place, more so than many other universities I know. But a writer will persevere wherever and whenever. As Rilke said some eighty years ago to a young poet, you must ask yourself the deep question: must I write? If the answer is a simple and sincere yes then all anybody else can do is stand aside, let you get on with it.
That is what I will do now on this page. This year’s Generation is eloquent evidence of the continuing creativity in Windsor. I am pleased to be associated with it.

Betrayal, despair, failed expectations, broken dreams, the pain of living in a cold, indifferent world. These are the predominant themes of the poetry and fiction we received for this year’s Generation. They are dark themes, but not wholly despairing. In nearly every work we published in Generation’91, there is also an affirmation of hope. Perhaps this is our focus as writers, people, and members of this generation: to maintain hope in the face of adversity. I would like to thank everyone who helped me ward off discouragement and remain hopeful while working on this year’s Generation, particularly Adele Weiseman, Dr. Watson, and my editorial board for their hard work and devotion to the project. Thanks also to Dr. McNamara and to all those who took the time to submit their work. Enjoy!
