Generation 1989
Introduction
The writing of imaginative or creative work is, to my mind, like writing letters to the world. The writer is first and foremost a communicator and the aim of the work is that of communication. It is not the aim of the writer to trick or to befuddle the reader or to escape into the private world of self-indulgence. To be clear is, of course, not the same as being simplistic. Rather it is to say to the world: “Listen to me I have something to share with you that I think has worthwhile value.”
In this issue of Generation there are many and disparate voices. Yet all of them share, in the urgency of their statements, the intensity of communication. We who are the “creative partners” in the sharing of such visions cannot help but be impressed by the youthful vigour and power of such utterances. We also share with the young writers an enthusiasm for their impressive skill in practicing what Chaucer called “the craft so longe to lerne”. This is a very worthwhile collection and it is as interesting as it is rewarding. Thanks for writing. Please write again – soon.
